Option 2: Go abroad and treat yourself by Phage Therapy
To treat yourself by phage therapy abroad will be much cheaper than going through intermediary organizations.
In Russia bacteriophagics are manufactured by Microgen and are freely sold in pharmacies. Before travelling make sure to check, on Microgen website or rather on the dedicated bacteriofag.ru, what are the bacteriophages that you would like to buy.
It would seem that in Georgia you should first to consult with a local doctor for a prescription.
It may happen that the pharmacy will need to order your phagics from their wholesaler. In which case you will have to wait one to three days in general to get the prescription filled. Therefore, try to go to a pharmacy upon arrival instead of waiting till the last day of your stay. Saying “Bacteriofag” to the pharmacist and writing on paper the names of bacteria to fight in Latin characters (ie in English), should be enough for the pharmacist to bring you the corresponding cocktails. Or simply submit a copy of & rsquo; screen of the web page on the phage bacteriofag.ru.
The Latin names of bacteria are on the packaging so it is easy to check that there is no error without knowing a word of Russian. It may be advantageous to buy all the phage cocktails that match the targeted bacteria because 2 differently named cocktails that attack the same bacteria may not contain the same bacteriophages active on this bacteria.
Microgen cocktails are packaged in liquid form, either in a flask of 100 ml or 4 vials of 20ml. The vials are sterile. They contain sterile culture media. Everything must remain sterile., reseal and keep refrigerated in order to avoid bacteria colonization. The dosage is indicated on Bacteriofag.ru website .
At the rate of two bottles 20 ml daily, for ten days of treatment, this makes 5 boxes of 4 X 20ml at a cost of around $14 a box, for a total cost of around $70. The amount to use depends on the site of infection, of whether the product is used locally or drunk, or both.
The drug can be very effective in low doses: In a proven case an Enteroccoccus faecalis in the urinary tract disappeared quickly. Two days of treatment with Pyobacteriophage eradicated the germ , with 10ml per os morning and evening and 10ml injection by catheter into the bladder morning and evening , eradication of the germ was established with an antibiogram a day and a half after the start of treatment.
However this same treatment followed during one week (with only 1 package) was not enough to eradicate Pseudomonas aeruginosa also present in urine, but still divided concentration by 10 according to antibiogram.
Note that, according to the manufacturers' instructions, normal bacteriophage treatment for a urinary resistant germ would rather have been 4 vials of 20ml (a package) a day during 20 days, at a rate of 20 ml morning and evening per os and 20ml bladder wash morning and evening, this makes 20 medicine boxes, instead of actual treatment as it was taken: only one package of 4 vials spread over a week.
Most legal systems allow you to bring with you in your luggage all drugs for personal use. A prescription is usually not required if the product is bought over the counter in the foreign pharmacy. There is usually a limit to the duration of treatment that can be brought back in your luggage. You should check you local regulations.:
“E.G. French regulation: Individuals may import medicinal products only in an amount consistent with personal therapeutic use for a treatment period not exceeding three months in normal use or during the treatment period specified in the prescription.
No drug import permit on French territory is needed for an individual who personally carries a drug.” (source ANSM).
Although it is not legally necessary, we can only recommend to consult a doctor in your country or in the foreign country..
If you went abroad to treat yourself , please post your testimony below in comments.
